Pliocene-Pleistocene Boundary Change

As you may remember, almost two years ago, the International Commission on Stratigraphy of the International Union of Geological Sciences voted to move the beginning of the Pleistocene (= Quaternary) to 2.58 million years ago (Ma), from its previously accepted position at 1.8 Ma. At the time, we hosted a discussion of the change, as did other organizations in the geological world. Now, the North American Stratigraphic Commission is concerned about the impact of this change, and at the November 2011 meeting of the Geological Society of America, it was decided that input should be sought from organizations in other disciplines that work with Pleistocene matters, such as paleoanthropology. They proposed a questionnaire which we have been asked to distribute to our members (paid or not). Please respond to the following questions:

Your responses, plus your name, affiliation(s) and email address if you wish, will be sent to Eric Delson who is organizing this effort and who will forward your responses to the NASC. (Don't forget to fill in the anti-spam characters).

Plio-Pleistocene Questionnaire

(1) Does this change in age directly affect your research?

(2) Do you see it causing significant problems in your field?

(3) Do you think there is any point in asking that it be reconsidered, taking your field's issues into consideration?

[There was strong support for a petition requesting the reconsideration, but that was never formally sent to IUCN]
